A rough guide is 0.12 to 0.16 kW per square metre for a well-insulated room, and more for older Hawke's Bay homes that leak heat. So a 30 square metre lounge lands around 3.5 to 5 kW. A calculator gets you close, but a site check gets it right.
What the calculator actually measures
Floor area is the starting point, but it's only half the story. Ceiling height matters, because you're heating the whole volume of air, not the floor. A 2.4 metre stud is normal. A raked ceiling or a villa with 3 metre studs needs noticeably more grunt.
Then it's about how fast the room loses what you put into it. Big windows, west-facing glass, an open-plan space that bleeds into a hallway, a concrete slab versus a suspended timber floor. All of it changes the number. The calculator asks a few of these so the kW figure isn't just a flat area sum.
Why Hastings rooms often need more kW than the chart says
You're sizing for two jobs here. Low-30s afternoons in summer where you want the room cooled, and hard June-to-August frosts where the unit is working flat out to heat. The capacity has to cover both ends, so we size to the harder job, which in most homes is the winter heat load.

Older uninsulated homes change the sums
Plenty of pre-2008 homes in Camberley and Flaxmere have little or no wall insulation, so heat pours out through the walls and single glazing about as fast as you make it. Those rooms need more kW per square metre than a modern, well-sealed build, sometimes 20 to 30 percent more.

Why we still come out and measure
A calculator is a good sanity check, but it can't see the west-facing wall of glass or the gap under your ranch slider. Get the size wrong and you either freeze in July or short-cycle in a room that's too small for the unit. What size heat pump do I need for my room?
